Katie Rose McLaughlin is an Obie & Drama League Award-winning Choreographer & Director based in New York City. Hailing from Minneapolis, MN, Katie Rose trained in ballet under the direction of Bonnie Mathis, and she attended the Joffrey/New School BFA program on full scholarship prior to kicking off her love affair with theater by training at a renowned clown school in Switzerland. She has performed with the Tony Award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune and as Esmeralda in Redmoon Theater’s Hunchback at Shakespeare Theatre in DC, Rockefeller Chapel in Chicago and at the New Victory Theater in NYC where it received a New York Times Critics’ Pick.
A choreographer and director for theateroperafilmmusic videos and viral TikToks, Katie Rose’s work has been presented at Ars Nova, HERE Arts Center, Joe’s Pub, Under the Radar, La Mama, St. Anne’s Warehouse, Abrons Arts Center, Target Margin, The New Ohio, BRIC, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Williamstown, and The Connelly among many others. She has also had the great pleasure of being a core creative on the Tony Award-winning show Hadestown as the Associate Director/Choreographer (Broadway, New York Theater Workshop, Edmonton, & South Korea) as well as choreographer for the First National Tour.
Katie Rose is the Artistic Director of Designated Movement Company, an avant-garde dance theater company that creates performance as an inquiry into the hierarchical structures society places on bodies, examined through a queer, feminist lens. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Chautauqua Institution, La Mama, CultureHub, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Process Space, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Dance Lab New York, and LMCC’s SPARC program. From 2020-2022 she created work as the co-Creative Director for the award-winning Theater in Quarantine which, in her tenure, produced over 20 different evenings of work, four NYT Critic’s Picks and was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.
In addition to her theatrical work Katie Rose enjoys volunteering with Reading Partners and West Side Campaign Against Hunger as well as leading the community dance event LINE DANCE CLUB (recently featured in Broadway choreographer Annie-B Parson’s book The Choreography of Everyday Life).
